Evaluating public interest in herpes zoster in Germany by leveraging the internet: a retrospective search data analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated that evaluating internet search data is a viable method for assessing public interest in HZ, thereby identifying areas of unmet need to support targeted public health campaigns.PMID:37580664 | DOI:10.1186/s12889-023-16463-4

Herpes zoster and long-term vascular risk: a retrospective cohort study
Sci Rep. 2023 Feb 9;13(1):2364. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-29667-w.ABSTRACTHerpes zoster (HZ) represents a serious health problem in the general population due to its abundance and complications. Stroke and acute myocardial infarction are well-documented short-term complications of HZ, primarily due to vasculopathy in the cerebral and coronary arteries. However, no major study to date has specifically demonstrated that HZ is a long-term risk factor for all Major Adverse Cardiac and Cerebrovascular Events (MACCE). A retrospective cohort study was conducted analyzing the association between HZ and MACCE. We compared HZ patients...

Exploring the purine core of 3'-C-ethynyladenosine (EAdo) in search of novel nucleoside therapeutics.
Abstract A series of new nucleoside analogues based on a C-3 branched ethynyl sugar derivative as present in 3'-C-ethynylcytidine (ECyd) and -adenosine (EAdo), combined with modified purine bases was synthetized and evaluated against a broad array of viruses and tumour cell lines. The pronounced cytostatic activity of EAdo was confirmed. EAdo and its 2,6-diaminopurine analogue showed inhibitory activity against vaccinia virus (EC50: 0.31 and 51μM, respectively). Derivative 10 on the other hand was found active against varicella zoster virus (EC50: 4.68μM). PMID: 26965865 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

In conclusion, our results suggest a previously unknown mechanism whereby the canonical NF-κB cascade and a mitochondrial fission pathway interdependently regulate endothelial inflammation. Lin28 as a Target for Nerve Regeneration https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2020/05/lin28-as-a-target-for-nerve-regeneration/ Researchers here show that the gene Lin28 regulates axon regrowth. In mice, raised levels of Lin28 produce greater regeneration of nerve injuries. Past research has investigated Lin28 from the standpoint of producing a more general improvement in regenerative capacity. It improves mitochondri...

This study investigated whether taller Polish adults live longer than their shorter counterparts. Data on declared height were available from 848,860 individuals who died in the years 2004-2008 in Poland. To allow for the cohort effect, the Z-values were generated. Separately for both sexes, Pearson's r coefficients of correlation were calculated. Subsequently, one way ANOVA was performed. The correlation between adult height and longevity was negative and statistically significant in both men and women. After eliminating the effects of secular trends in height, the correlation was very weak (r = -0.0044 in men and ...
